How Facebook is using heat from its data centres to keep

How Facebook is using heat from its data centres to keep

Facebook in its latest sustainability report mentioned that it is helping Odense, a city in Denmark, to stay warm during winter by recycling the heat generated in its data centre and redistributing that heat to households by partnering with a local heating company. The ideal working temperature for data centres is around 28-degree Celsius. Most data centres simply use air conditioners to pump out excess heat in the local environment.
But Facebook in one of its data centres in Denmark is using this heat. “Facebook has developed infrastructure to capture and recycle excess heat generated by its servers at its Odense Data Center and will donate the heat to the local community. The energy recovered from the servers will be recycled by a newly constructed heat pump facility, supported by 100% renewable energy. This energy will then be directed into the local district heating system, operated by district heating company Fjernvarme Fyn,” explained Facebook in its report.

This data centre in Odense was inaugurated in September 2019 and is spread across 50,000 square-meter. Energy is taken from wind turbines to run the data centre and to make the heat generated from the servers useful, hot air from the server is directed over water coils to heat water. This warm water is maintained by renewable energy in a heat pump facility to create
hot water for the district heating network operated by Fjernvarme Fyn.
“Once completed, our facility’s heat recovery infrastructure will help recover 100,000 MWh of energy per year – enough to warm 6,900 homes,” claims Facebook.
Not just Facebook, even Amazon recycles heat for good use. As per a report by ZDNet, Amazon uses heat from nearby data centres of another company to keep its headquarters in Seattle warm.
